A new pet grooming shop with a self-wash station has opened in downtown San Leandro, owned by longtime Nationally Certified Groomer Elena Metz.
Pet Image will hold its grand opening ribbon-cutting today (Thursday) from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
“My staff and I are all here because we love animals. Our goal is to provide a stress-free way to beautify pets. We look to put health and beauty together for dogs and cats,” Metz says.
Metz graduated in 1993 from the San Francisco S.P.C.A Grooming College, and immediately opened her first shop (Marina Pet Grooming) in San Leandro at the corner of Marina Boulevard and Doolittle Drive.
In 1996 she relocated to the corner of Marina and Washington Avenue, but that shop was still too small. She kept looking for a better location, and the next move became a family affair.
“I found this space downtown which is just beautiful. It used to be an art supply store. My step-daughter Julia Metz redesigned the interior, which has a really good flow now. She graduated from Cal Poly with an Architecture degree and did a wonderful job,” says Metz. “Also, my daughter Asya Ivanov did all the graphics for the walls, windows and fliers.”
Though the doors originally opened onto East 14th Street, customers now enter from a parking lot at the rear of the store. Just inside the door is a $15 self-wash station, where people can wash their own pets at waist-high stainless steel tubs. (It’s $18 to $22 for larger dogs.)
Everything is provided at the self-wash station, including shampoo, towels and professional dryers. All products are natural and botanical.
For those who prefer to drop off their pets for grooming, dogs and cats are kept in separate rooms. While they wait their turn, dogs can actually watch videos on a flat-screen TV of puppies playing. The shop also has playpens for dogs who may need a little more room.
Pet Image provides such services as dematting, cuts, ear cleaning, nail clipping and even hair coloring. In addition to full-service and show grooming, Pet Image has a professional pet dental service that comes in twice a month to provide anesthesia-free teeth cleaning. An online gallery of before-and-after photos and service prices may be viewed at petimagegrooming.com.
Pet Image is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. First-time customers receive a 10 percent discount and estimates can be made prior to grooming. Pet Image is located at 1336 East 14th St., San Leandro. Telephone: 357-8035.
