Dick’s Restaurant and Satellite Sports Lounge has been a fixture in San Leandro since the 1960s. Now a new owner, Srini Veeraraghavan, has bought the business and is already upgrading the premises.
“We introduced free wi-fi for customers, and we’re the first in this neighborhood to do so,” says Srini, as he prefers to be called. “We also want our banquet room and catering to accommodate all the communities here. We’ll gear the menu to the group, even if the food may not be on our regular menu. If a group wants Spanish or Italian food at their event, we will make it happen.”
Srini had been looking for a restaurant to invest in for at least a year, and thought Dick’s was a good bet. The sale was completed last month.
“I’ve lived in Fremont for 10 years and have been in the restaurant business for 20 years. I’ve been the controller for 20 Denny’s franchises all over California, and was looking to buy a similar type of restaurant. I know Dick’s has a long history in San Leandro, I’ve read a lot of reviews on it, and I know it will be a profitable business,” he says.
Before moving to the United States in 2000, Srini earned an MBA in the United Kingdom and became a chartered accountant there as well. He and a business partner have also invested in a restaurant in Texas, but Srini says he loves California and prefers working here. He expects Dick’s Restaurant will give him the hands-on experience he enjoys.
“My main motive and goal is to provide customer satisfaction in the quality of food and service,” he says. “I like the one-to-one relationship with customers. If my customers are happy, it makes me happy.”
Dick’s has banquet facilities for groups from 25 to 200 people. Its sports bar, which has long been a favorite spot to watch games, will soon be upgraded. Additional new TV screens have been purchased for both the bar the restaurant itself. It’s all part of the new vision Srini has for Dick’s.
Breakfast specials will now be offered from 6 to 10 a.m. weekdays, and specials for seniors are in the works. Three to five daily specials will be introduced for dinner. The previous owner, Al Habeed, will stay on for a while as transitional chef. The restaurant menu will continue to feature customer favorites, such as Belgian waffles, chef’s special omelets, roast prime rib and chef’s salads.
Dick’s Restaurant Featured in Radiohead Video
A bit of San Leandro trivia: Dick’s Restaurant received international recognition in 1995 when the British musical group Radiohead filmed its “High and Dry” video there. The video can still be seen on YouTube.
