BATZ, Irving, of Castro Valley, passed away at his home on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at age 84. Mr. Batz spent his childhood in Chicago. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict. In 1954 he began teaching at Livermore High School and in 1955 moved to Arroyo High in San Lorenzo. He later served as Director of Special Student Services at Chabot College and Dean of Students at Las Positas College, retiring in 1991. A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 23 at Temple Beth Sholom, 642 Dolores Ave., San Leandro.
CAISSE, Richard H., of Castro Valley, passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at age 92. A native of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Mr. Caisse was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a longtime resident of San Leandro. He retired from the Oakland Supply Center in 1976. A memorial service was held June 4 at the Neptune Society in Castro Valley.
COBURN, Loris Ann Harding, of Castro Valley, passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, after a short illness. She was 77. A native of Salem, Oregon, Mrs. Coburn was a gifted pianist, organist, performer and teacher. She served as organist at Eden United Church of Christ for 43 years and was a member of many organization, including the Bay Area Chamber Music Society and the California Music Teachers’ Association. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at Eden United Church of Christ in Hayward.
GOUVEIA, Celestino, of Castro Valley, passed away on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at age 89, after a courageous battle with cancer and Parkinson’s disease. A native of New Bedford, Massachusetts, Mr. Gouveia served as a Medical Technician during World War II. He worked at UC Berkeley for 25 years before retiring. A celebration of life will be held starting with a Mass at 5 p.m. today, June 6, at the Born Jesus Miligroso Hall, 21160 Ocean View Drive in Hayward.
HOMEN, Lucia C. “Lucy,” who lived in Castro Valley for 61 years, passed away at her home on Saturday, May 26, 2012, at age 88. A native of Arkansas City, Kansas, she moved to California in 1945 and worked in the cafeteria of Hayward High School for 25 years. Mrs. Homen had been a member of Our Lady of Grace Church since 1951. Services were held June 2 at Holy Angels Funeral Center in Hayward.
PEGIS, LeRoy M., a lifelong resident of the Hayward area, died at his Castro Valley home on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at age 75. Mr. Pegis joined the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District in 1958 and rose to become Recreation Supervisor, contributing to many outstanding programs. He retired after a 31 year career at H.A.R.D. and later formed his own dance band, The Escorts, that played many local venues in the late ’60s and ’70s. He was a member of I.D.E.S., Faro-Hayward Sister City Committee and Centro Social M. Julio Martins Foundation among other organizations. A Funeral mass was held June 1 at All Saints Catholic Church in Hayward.
SIMS, Gordan L., of Castro Valley, passed away at his home on Thursday, May 17, 2012, at age 82. A native of Pennsylvania, Mr. Sims moved to California at an early age. After serving in the U.S. Navy for two years, he began a 40-year career in banking, retiring as Assistant Vice President of United California Bank in Hayward. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, at Neighborhood Church/Three Crosses, 20600 John Drive, Castro Valley .
YOTHERS, Ruth Esther, who lived in Castro Valley for 62 years, passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2012, at age 92. Mrs. Yothers and her husband, Chester Dwight Yothers, were charter members of Neighborhood Church, founded in Oakland and later relocated to Castro Valley. A celebration of her life will begin at 2 p.m. today, June 6, in the chapel of Neighborhood Church. Arrangements were made by Jess C.
