BAUSONE, Lena Marie, of Castro Valley, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, July 16, 2012. at age 99 years and 5 months. She was born in Rockford, Illinois in 1913 to Joseph and Vincentina Salomone. The family moved to Sophia, West Virginia and then Monterey, Calif. She was the eldest of 7 siblings. Lena helped her father with his meat market and grocery store and learned that business well. She also learned to cook, clean and care for her brothers and sisters, at the side of her dear mother whom she loved until the end. Lena’s brothers, Angelo, Al and Philip Salomone; and sister, Mary Russo, preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister, Florence Bommarito; brother, Jim Salomone of Monterey; son, Rosario (Ross), and his wife, Laureen, of Castro Valley; daughter, Vinnie Thoms, and son-in-law, Harry Thoms, of San Diego; 5 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. She was a homemaker and wife to Frank Bausone who also preceded her in death. The two met at a USO dance during the early years of WWII. Lena waited for Frank’s return from WWII in the South Pacific and then they were married. They relocated to San Leandro in 1954. Lena resided there until recently when she could no longer live alone. She is remembered for her wonderful Italian home cooking, never raising her voice, and continual silent strength. She loved entertaining at home, playing pinochle and chocolate cake. Her unconditional love has been a constant reminder of what our family values are. A Celebration of Life will be held in the fall of this year.
CARVOUNNIS, John, of Castro Valley, passed away on Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at age 89. Mr. Carvounnis was a member of the Resurrection Greek Orthodox Church of Castro Valley. Funeral services were held July 31 at Resurrection Greek Orthodox Church. Arrangements were made by Santos-Robinson Mortuary, 160 Estudillo Ave., San Leandro.
GAVELLO, Fred J. Jr., of Castro Valley, passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 77. A veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, Mr. Gavello worked for Oakland Scavenger Co. for 37 years. In honor of his request, services were private. Arrangements were made by Holy Angels Funeral Center in Hayward.
INGRAM, Annette Gail, of Castro Valley, passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2012, at age 70. A native of San Leandro, Mrs. Ingram was a graduate of San Lorenzo High School. Visitation and a rosary were held July 27 at Holy Angels Funeral Center in Hayward.
JACKSON, Russell Lee, who lived in Castro Valley since 1960, passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2012, at age 90. A native of Oklahoma, Mr. Jackson was a U.S. Navy veteran who served as a gunner on the USS Mississippi during World War II. He had retired after more than 40 years as a sprinkler fitter with Local 483. A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 29, at Horatio’s, 60 San Leandro Marina, San Leandro.
SILVA, Ron, a longtime resident of Castro Valley, passed away on Monday, July 23, 2012. Mr. Silva was a member of Operating Engineers Local No. 3. He enjoyed playing with the Castro Valley Community Band for many years. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nancy Silva; his children, Matthew (Trudie) and Carolyn Paxman (Don); his grandchildren, Drew and Sydney; his sister Beverly Fernandez and brother Don Silva, brother-in-law Steve DeLima (Kathy), Jim DeLima (Susan) and sister-in-law Sherry Luttrell (Rick) and many other relatives. Friends and family celebrated his life Sunday, July 29, at Willow Park Restaurant in Castro Valley.
