CHERNISS, Ethel Lazar, who lived in San Leandro since 1957, passed away on Thursday, August 16, 2012, at age 87. A native of Whiteville, North Carolina, Mrs. Cherniss worked for eight years at the The Emporium Department Store in San Francisco and later for Bank of America in San Leandro until her retirement in 1990. At her request, no services were held.
GYARMATHY, Joseph C., of San Leandro, passed away on Friday, August 24, 2012, at age 66. Mr. Gyarmathy was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was the successful business owner of J.R. Fence, Inc. Services will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31, at Holy Angels, 1051 Harder Road, in Hayward.
HART, Joyce, formerly of San Lorenzo, passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, at age 86. A native of Vernal, Utah, Mrs. Hart was a volunteer in the Adult Literacy Program, Aahmes Shrine Tegula. Services were held Aug. 28 at Grissom’s Chapel and Mortuary in San Lorenzo.
KETTLITZ, Karsten K., passed away on Monday, August 20, 2012, after a lengthy illness at age 69. He was a resident of San Leandro for 40 years. KIRKLAND, Barry, of San Leandro, passed away on Thursday, August 23, 2012, at age 60. Mr. Kirkland was an employee of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center and was in Fellowship at Fairhaven Bible Chapel. LARSEN, Carolyn M. (Erickson), of San Leandro and Pleasanton, passed away on Saturday. August 25, 2012, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 67. She was raised in San Leandro. In 1997, she and her sisters opened Sunflower Manor, a residential care facility. A graveside service will be at 10 a..m. Friday, Aug. 31, at Oakmont Memorial Park, 2099 Reliez Valley Rd., in Lafayette, followed by a memorial at 12 noon at Cross Winds Church, 6444 Sierra Ct., in Dublin.
McELVANY, Ellen Lee (Ghelfi), of San Leandro, passed away at Eden Medicl Center in Castro Valley on Friday, August 10, 2012, at age 49. She was a legal secretary whose career was focused on nonprofit concern aiding youth and the disabled. A celebration of life service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 31, at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, 5562 Clayton Road, in Concord.
MIGUEL, Palmira “Polly,” of San Leandro, passed away in Fairfield on Friday, August 24, 2012, at age 99. Mrs. Miguel was a longtime member of St. Leander’s Young at Heart, S.P.R.S.I. No. 5 in San Leandro, I.C.D.E.S. of Hayward, and I.D.E.S. No. 9 of San Leandro. A funeral procession will leave Santos-Robinson Mortuary, 160 Estudillo Ave., in San Leandro, at 12:30 p.m. today, Aug. 30, for a 1 p.m. funeral liturgy at St. Leander Catholic Church.
PEREIRA, Josephine, of San Leandro and a resident of Alameda County for the last 47 years, passed away on Tuesday, August 21, 2012, at age 83. Mrs. Pereira worked for Kellogg’s for 25 years before retiring as Quality Control Inspector. A visitation was held Aug. 26 at Grissom’s Chapel and Mortuary in San Lorenzo.
RODRIGUES, Doris Frances, who resided in San Leandro for more than 62 years and at Baywood Court in Castro Valley for the past seven years, passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2012. She was 92. No services were held at her request.
SALVADOR, Louisa O., of San Leandro, passed away on Tuesday, August 21, 2012, at age 98, A native of Portugal, Mrs. Salvador worked at Del Monte in Oakland for many years and was a member of the Teamsters Union. A funeral liturgy was held on Aug. 27 at St. Leander Church. Arrangements were made by Santos-Robinson Mortuary, 160 Estudillo Ave., in San Leandro.
SOUZA, Clarine Anne Gnutzmann, of Orangevale, Calif., passed away in Reno at the age of 77. Born in Alta, Iowa, she resided in Alameda for 52 years. She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, David Ronald Souza, and her brother, Keith Gnutzmann. She is survived by her children, Katherine Kneer, Donna Lack, Diana Souza, Michael Souza, Christina Robertson and Maria Barnett; and her 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Clarine was a dedicated mother, talented artist, adventurous world traveler and, most recently, social activist. She offered her boundless energy to Christ Church, PTA, Bayview Women’s Club and Elk’s Lodge activities. Pursing her artistic talents, she founded The Glass Factory, a stained glass studio for local artists. Clarine had a passion for travel, whether it was seeing all 50 states or visiting 41countries on five continents. Since 2001, she’s lived with her daughter, Kathy, on her farm in Orangevale, enjoying gardening, animal husbandry and working for social justice causes. She will be remembered for her spirit of adventure, warm hospitality and open embrace of life. Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 1, at 11 a.m. at Faith Episcopal Church in Cameron Park followed by a celebration of her life in Orangevale. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Obama for America, Nuns on the Bus, or a charity of your choice.
STEWART, Keon Coleman, of San Leandro, passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2012, at age 32. Mr. Stewart was a native of Oakland. A memorial service was held Aug. 24, at Easter Hill United Methodist Church in Richmond.
TOM, Laura Wong (Chinese name Lai Hing Wong), formerly of San Leandro, passed away on Friday, August 10, 2012, at age 94. Born in Nam Sing Village, Taishan, China, she came to the U.S. in 1924 and began a career in 1942 with the U.S. Department of the Army, retiring in 1983 as the Chief of Traffic Services Division, Military Traffic Management Command, Western Area. She had lived in Auburn for the past five years. Memorial services were to be private.
VICKERS, Jean Elizabeth, of San Lorenzo, passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2012, at age 88. Ms. Vickers worked at the Food Pantry in San Lorenzo and was a member of the PEO International. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, at United Church of Christ, 945 Paseo Grande, in San Lorenzo.
WHITE, David E., patient, loving, funny, giving and thoughtful would be words to describe David E. White — with a love of the outdoors and camping with family and friends. David lost his battle to cancer on Saturday, August 25, 2012, he was 68. He died peacefully with his daughter by his side. David was born Oct. 19, 1943 in Richmond, Virginia, and moved to California where he went to Fremont High in Oakland, and graduated from San Leandro High after moving from Oakland. After graduation, he learned to become a machinist in the tool and die industry, and worked at Applied Fusion and Stockton Metals in San Leandro. David married his wife, Judy, in August of 1966. They were married for 18 years. David is survived by his loving daughter, Deborah White. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to: The American Cancer Society, P.O.
