BENZO, Antoinette A.
BENZO, Antoinette A., of San Leandro, born February 3, 1918, passed on September 8, 2012. Memorial services were held on September 16 at Chapel fo the Chimes, Oakland.
BICKERTON, Oscar, of San Leandro, passed away on Tuesday, September 11, 2012, at age 87. A native of Berry, Alabama, Mr. Bickerton was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He later worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad. A celebration of his life will follow.
FAGUNDES, John R., of San Lorenzo, passed away on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at age 82. Mr. Fagundes was a bank examiner for the State of California, retiring in 1991 as deputy superintendent. A funeral Mass was said Sept.14 at St. John’sChurch in San Lorenzo.
LEGASPI, Leon C. Jr., of San Leandro passed on September 16, 2012. Visitation begins on Thursday, September 20, 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a Vigil service at 7 p.m. at Santos-Robinson Mortuary, 160 Estudillo Ave., San Leandro. The Funeral Liturgy will be on Friday, September 21 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in San Leandro. Interment to follow at Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno. MENDES, Josephine (Jo), January 17, 1938 – September 13, 2012 • Resident of San Leandro, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, at her home in San Leandro on September 13, 2012. Beloved mother of Paul Mendes and wife Karen, Rose Marie Buccieri (belated husband Mike), Thomas Mendes and wife Lori, Teresa Meadows and husband Jim. Josephine cherished her 11 grandchildren: Taralyn Fonseca, John and Alyssa Mendes, Michael and Christopher Buccieri, Tommy, Ryan and Nicholas Mendes, Kristen, Branden, and Justen Meadows, and her 4 great-grandchildren: Gavin and Makayla Buccieri, and Brooks and Jake Fonseca. Jo is survived by her sister, Tina Porras and husband John (of San Leandro). Josephine was born on January 17, 1938 in Kansas City, Missouri. She was the fourth of five children of Joseph and Ida Spitaleri. She graduated from Northeastern High School and married Manuel Paul Mendes in 1955, then moved to San Leandro. Jo was a very active parishioner at St. Felicitas Church for over 50 years; her most notable contributions included President of the Women’s Club, Eucharistic Minister, Bereavement Minister and Divorced Catholic Facilitator for the Diocese of Oakland. In addition, she took pride in being the housekeeper and cook for the Priest for over 30 years, and also coordinated hot lunch programs for both St. Felicitas and St. Joseph High School in Alameda during the 1960s and 1970s. Josephine was a dedicated mother participating in all of her children’s activities, including Catholic Youth Organization, Washington Manor Little League, Bobby Sox Softball, Boy Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout Leader. She enjoyed ushering at the Hayward Little Theatre and Chanticleers Theatre. She touched our lives, was beloved by many and will forever remain within our hearts. The Vigil Service was held on Monday, Sept. 17, and the Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at St. Felicitas. MORTON, Gerald Donald, of San Leandro, passed away on Sunday, September 16, 2012, after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for more than 20 years. He was 84. Mr. Morton was chief electrical engineer at the San Francisco Hilton Hotel, retiring in 1990. A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 22 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 43148 Mission Blvd., Fremont, with a small reception to follow.
