A San Leandro police officer was injured on the job while attempting to arrest an alleged sex criminal.

On Sunday evening around 7:45 p.m., officers tried to arrest the suspect as he left his home, but the suspect resisted and jumped into his truck, leading officers in a pursuit, according to Lt. Jeff Tudor of the San Leandro police.

One officer tried to pull the suspect over on the 500 block of Tudor Avenue, but the man – identified as 48-year-old Joseph Banner – instead rammed his truck into the door of the officer’s patrol car, according to Tudor.

The officer sustained “moderate injuries” but was treated and realeased the same day, Tudor said. Banner fled on foot and the injured officer pursued him, but  he got away. The next day, Banner turned himself in and was arrested for attempted murder in addition to the sex crimes.
