Five robbers held up the Safeway at 555 Bancroft Avenue at gunpoint Tuesday night just after 9 p.m.

At least four of the men had guns, possibly all of them, and at least one of the guns was described as a semi-automatic.

The suspects entered the grocery store and ordered the employees and shoppers to get down on the floor, according to Lt. Rick DeCosta of the San Leandro police.

The robbers then went to the checkout stands and pulled the cash from two registers.

The suspects ran out through the front door and then ran north on Bancroft Avenue, but no one saw whether they got into a getaway car, DeCosta said.

The suspects were all wearing dark hooded sweatshirts with bandanas over their faces to hide their identities, DeCosta said. Witnesses describe them as black males in their early twenties.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call the San Leandro police at 577-2740 or their anonymous tip line at 577-3278.
