Plate Reader Catches Crook
The license-plate-reader-equipped patrol car helped nab a car thief just before 1 p.m. Sunday, according to a police press release.
The man was driving on E. 14th Street near Estabrook when a patrolling officer was alerted by the system, according to Lt. Jeff Tudor of the San Leandro police.
The officer pulled the truck over and the passenger was identified and released. The driver was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle and having burglary tools.
The truck was reported stolen in an armed carjacking in Oakland, but it is unknown if the suspect arrested by the San Leandro police is also the carjacker. No weapon was found during this arrest.
Dog Sniffs Out Suspect
Around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, an officer patrolling near Washington Avenue and Parrott Street recognized a man driving by who had a warrant out for his arrest, according to Lt. Randy Brandt of the San Leandro police. The cop tried to pull the man over, but the suspect pulled into a parking lot and then ditched his car and fled on foot.
Police set up a perimeter and eventually found the man hiding under a backyard deck on the 1600 block of Hays Street with the help of a police dog. He was arrested for the warrant and evading cops.
