Kenyon Johnson scored on a 25-yard pass from quarterback Kevin Mosi at the end of the third quarter to lift San Lorenzo to a 21-16 win over Piedmont on Friday.
Then the San Lorenzo defense held the Highlanders through the fourth quarter and pounced on a few fumbles to nail down the win in a game played on the Arroyo High field.
San Lorenzo led until the third quarter when William Meredith returned a punt 60 yards for a Piedmont touchdown to put the Highlanders ahead, 16-14.
The Rebels took back the momentum on Johnson’s touchdown, which was set up by a catch by Raymon Moore.
“The quarterback and line did a great job,” Johnson said. “Mosi threw a great pass.”
Behind the Rebels line, running back Raymon Moore picked up 120 yards rushing, and Charlie Davis III added a couple of key first downs. When the Rebels needed a first down to keep possession in the fourth quarter, Davis was determined to get it, carrying about half the Highlanders on his back on one run as he kept his feet pumping to the first down maker.
“We had to get that first down,” Davis said. “Don’t stop running, no matter what.”
The Rebels took the lead in the second quarter on touchdown runs by Mosi and Davis. Oscar Bernal kicked the extra point on both touchdowns to make it 14-0. Piedmont helped by giving up four fumbles in the first half to hand San Lorenzo plenty of chances.
The Highlanders got on the board in the second quarter when running back Kyle Dalton plowed into the end zone from the 5-yard line to make it 14-7.
Dalton later got Piedmont down into Rebel territory and the Highlanders attempted a field goal but the San Lorenzo defense blocked it. But Piedmont was successful on another field goal after Meredith ran the ball down to the San Lorenzo 1-yard line – where the Rebel defense made another stop to allow only the 3-point kick.
This Saturday, San Lorenzo will travel to Mt. Eden for a game at 1:45 p.m. San Leandro will host Hayward on Friday at 7 p.m. at Chabot College. Arroyo will travel to Sunset Field in Hayward to meet Tennyson on Friday at 7 p.m.
