THEATRICAL & MUSICAL PERFORMANCES

“Deathtrap” the five-character, two-act thriller that holds the record for the longest running comedy-thriller on Broadway, opens this Friday at Chanticleer’s Theatre, 3683 Quail Ave. in Castro Valley. Described as a play-within-a-play, the plot revolves around playwright Sidney Bruhl who’s trying to write the perfect murder mystery. Performances through Nov. 10 are at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays with 2 p.m. matinees on Sundays Oct. 28 and Nov. 4. For tickets ($18, $15) call 510-733-5483 or visit chanticleers.org. “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” will be presented by San Leandro Players Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. through Oct. 28 at the San Leandro Museum/Auditorium, 320 W. Estudillo Avenue. “Wings & Things,” animal-inspired whimsical art by Susan Bass will be on display at the Castro Valley Library through Nov. 5.

“Around the World,” an evening of dinner, entertainment (including Chinese yoyo experts, singers, dancers and guzheng musicians) and live auction treasures, a benefit for the Hayward Arts Council, will take place at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at the City Hall Rotunda, 777 B St., Hayward. “A Single Step...Begins the Journey: Culmination of the Advanced Portfolio Class by Geir Jordahl & Oliver Klink,” a showcase of 23 photographic artists, opens at PhotoCentral Gallery, 1099 E St., Hayward, this Friday with a public reception and portfolio viewing from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The exhibition continues through Dec. 13. 51st Annual Cal State Art Exhibition of paintings, ceramics, sculpture and more by Cal State East Bay’s faculty and staff will open with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 and continue through Dec. 1 in the Gallery on the first floor of the Art & Education Building, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd., Hayward. Hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and Saturday, and 2-7 p.m. Thursdays. Parking on campus is $2 per hour at meters. The Gallery will be closed Nov. 22-23 for Thanksgiving.
