“Deathtrap” the five-character, two-act thriller that holds the record for the longest running comedy-thriller on Broadway, opens this Friday at Chanticleer’s Theatre, 3683 Quail Ave. in Castro Valley. Described as a play-within-a-play, the plot revolves around playwright Sidney Bruhl who’s trying to write the perfect murder mystery. “Wings & Things,” animal-inspired whimsical art by Susan Bass will be on display at the Castro Valley Library through Nov. 5.

51st Annual Cal State Art Exhibition of paintings, ceramics, sculpture and more by Cal State East Bay’s faculty and staff will open with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 and continue through Dec. 1 in the Gallery on the first floor of the Art & Education Building, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd., Hayward. Hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and Saturday, and 2-7 p.m. Thursdays. Parking on campus is $2 per hour at meters. The Gallery will be closed Nov. 22-23 for Thanksgiving.
