CROWELL, Christine, a longtime resident of San Leandro, passed away at her home on Monday, October 8, 2012, at age 68. A native of New York City, Mrs. Crowell had lived in Alameda County since age five. She was a home tutor in the local schood district. No memorial services were held at her request.
ESPINOSA, Arthur F., May 15, 1924 – October 13, 2012, resident of San Leandro. Funeral services were held on Oct. 18, at St. Felicitas Church in San Leandro. Burial took place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward.
FONG, Yukiye, of San Leandro, passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2012, after a brief illness. She was 90. Mrs. Fong was employed at New York Life in Emeryville until she was 85. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at Sycamore Church, 1111 Navallier St., El Cerrito.
JOHNSTON, Thelma E. Johnston, 1923 – 2012, 56-year resident of San Leandro, is survived by 2 sons, Paul (Connie) of Roseburg, Oregon and Ray (Lori) of Atlanta, Georgia; 4 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. She is preceeded in death by her husband, Ray. A volunteer at San Leandro Public Library for 18 years, Thelma was awarded “Volunteer of the Year” in the 1990s. She worked as marker at Mervyns distribution center in Hayward and took a creative writing class at Chabot College. Thelma was an excellent gardener who provided flowers to several nursing homes and made friends with all she made contact with. Thelma continued to ride a bike until she was 85 years old and walked everyday. A four-year pancreatic cancer survivor at age 85, she was well known in San Leandro and loved the color purple. She was also a 56-year member of the First Presbyterian Church of San Leandro. Thelma will continue to be an inspiration to family and friends, and will be greatly missed. Funeral Service was held Oct. 19 at First Presbyterian Church in San Leandro. Burial followed at Chapel of the Chimes Cemetery in Hayward. KLINGER, Peggy Jane, of San Leandro, passed away on Friday, September 21, 2012, at age 82. Mrs. Klinger was the wife of Richard David Klinger who preceded her in death on Sept. 20.

LANGEN, Alvina Louise passed away on Monday, October 15, 2012, just four days short of her 104th birthday. A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, she moved to San Leandro in 1943. A Mass was said Oct. 19 at Saint Leander’s Church in San Leandro. Arrangements made by the San Leandro Funeral Home, 407 Estudillo Ave.
LONG, David, a 37 year resident of San Leandro, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2012, in Oregon. He is survived by his wife Pat of 48 years, and several family members. He loved to bowl three days week and was tutor for Project Literacy at the San Leandro Library. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, October 28 in Salem, Oregon.
SALLAZ, Suzanne Julitte, of San Leandro, passed away on Saturday, October 13, 2012, at age 80. A native of Caen, France, she moved to the Bay Area in 1955 and settled in San Leandro. A memorial service was held Oct. 20 at Santos-Robinson Mortuary, 160 Estudillo Ave., San Leandro.
SWART, Margaret Jean, died peacefully on October 17, 2012, after a long illness. She was born on February 14, 1921 in Spokane, Washington. After high school, where she played basketball, she obtained her nursing degree at St. Luke’s Hospital in Spokane. She served in the United States Navy in Oklahoma and Hawaii during WWII. After the war, she served at the Navy Hospital in Bremerton, Washington where she met her husband, Robert Swart, M.D. They were married in January 1949 and were together for over 63 years. After several years in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she moved to the Bay Area in 1955, and lived in San Leandro for over 50 years. Margaret is survived by 7 children, Kathleen Boucher, Patricia, David, Brian, Margaret Colleen, Catherine Carol (husband Kenneth) Hess, and Gary; 5 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Margaret was a member of Sequoyah Country Club, where she was a “niner” and an avid bridge player. Services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 1 p.m. at Santos-Robinson Mortuary, 160 Estudillo Ave., in San Leandro (510-483-0123, www.santos-robinson.com).
VAN DUSEN, Eileen “Susie,” of San Leandro, passed away on Saturday, October 20, 2012, at age 69. Visitation will be from noon to 8:30 p.m. today, Oct. 25, at Santos-Robinson Mortuary, 160 Estudillo Ave., San Leandro. A Chapel Blessing celebrating her life will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the mortuary.
WHITWORTH, Helen Enos Antone, of San Leandro, passed away on Thursday, October 11, 2012, at age 97. A native of Pahala, Hawaii, she was the second generation of Portuguese immigrants who came to the Big Island to work on sugar plantations. Services were held Oct. 23 at St. Felicitas Church in San Leandro.
