CVHS Alumni Band President Chris Salak (at left) and Alumni Treasurer Steve Fernald presented School Superintendent Jim Negri (center) with checks totaling $2,700 last week.

Last month’s concert by the Castro Valley High School Alumni Band raised nearly $3,000 to benefit the Center for the Arts and the high school’s instrumental music program.

“It’s really a great feeling to raise money in light of the financial crunch in education,” said

Bob Wiseman who’s played upright bass in the alumni band ever since its first fundraising performance in 2004. That concert brought in $8,000 for the Center.

“It makes sense to donate to music since they are the first to go when there are budget cuts,” he said.

Started as a jam session among a few former CVHS students, the Alumni Band has evolved into an annual organized event. This year it drew former students from the graduating class of 1958 to younger musicians who will be in the CVHS Class of 2015.

The October 7th performance with its 72 performers in the concert and jazz bands raised $200 for the center and $2,500 for the CVHS instrumental music program.
