Collection rates for recycling are cheaper than garbage rates in the Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSan).

For example, a standard 4-cubic-yard garbage bin costs $554.17 per month, while the cost for the same size bin for recycling is $385.63, a saving of 30 percent.

Nearly three out of four businesses in the district have already subscribed to the less expensive recycling service.

In 2009, CVSan also implemented the 4R Business, 4R Planet program to certify businesses that go above and beyond recycling by taking part in each of the 4R categories – reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot. Businesses may already be completing all 4Rs and not even know it!

Certified “4R Star” businesses now receive cash awards of $150 to $525. They are recognized for their recycling achievements on CVSan’s website, in it’s quarterly “Pipeline” newsletter, and with window decals, ads in the Castro Valley Forum, framed display certificates, and news releases.

Almost 40 businesses have now been certified and received their 4R Star award and recognition.
