The heavy equipment, plastic fencing, orange cones, and the dust and debris have been cleared from Castro Valley Boulevard revealing a grand new downtown that will be the focus of a long-awaited street party this Saturday afternoon.

Merchants and county officials are hoping for a big “Meet in the Street” turnout from 3 to 6 p.m. along the Boulevard between San Miguel Ave. and Redwood Rd. for a celebration to mark the completion of the $11 million Streetscape project.

It will include a ribbon cutting, speeches by local political leaders and merchants, live entertainment, areas along the street dedicated to music performances, a wine, beer and margarita booth, a Passport game to engage celebrants with the local merchants, a Poker Run, and – at 5:30 – a Light Parade.  The event is completely free to the public.

“We want to celebrate the construction project and to recognize the downtown Castro Valley business community,” explained Marita Hawryluk of the County Development Agency. “It’s all done and we really want people to come down and celebrate.”

Scheduled speakers include Supervisor Nate Miley, Community Development Agency officials, Sanitary District General Manager Roland Williams, and Ralph Johnson, a member of the Sanitary District’s Board of Directors.
