San Leandro Cross Country Varsity Girls team has looked strong through the season.
The team has made great strides, led by seniors Evellyn Le and Emilie Shen, freshman Wenqian Deng, sophomores Mimi Nguyen, Fiona Gee, Lupita Montoya, Michelle Young and junior Ellie Erickson.
Several memories this year for the varsity team — placing 5th overall as a team and receiving team medals at the Castro Valley Invitation, and placing 6th out of 12 scoring teams at Mt. Sac Invitational.
Recently, the Pirates placed 6th out of 12 teams at the Western Alameda County Conference Championships (WACC) along with personal records set by several athletes.
Several runners had outstanding times, including Evellyn Le who ran a 20:49, Lupita Montoya with a 21:38, a personal record for her, Michelle Young running a 21:47, Wenqian Deng running a personal record of 21:55, Emilie Shen with a 22:51, Mimi Nguyen improving by 10 seconds with a 23:22, and Ellie Erickson running a 24:19.
Fiona Gee, one of the varsity runners, ran frosh and improved on her time by running a 14:46 2-mile.
“This group of talented ladies practice and compete hard,” says coach David Fang. “They all pick each other up and have fun. As a coach, I am honored and proud to be coaching this varsity girls team. I am looking forward to them competing at NCS on Nov. 17 and setting more personal records.”
