Justin Hutchison’s first attempt at running for office fell short but he took it in stride.
In his run for the City Council, Hutchison provided the most entertaining campaign speech with his video on YouTube. (On YouTube type “San Leandro Hutch”)
Hutchison watched the returns come in on Tuesday night at Porky’s Pizza in Washington Manor with his wife and baby, mom and dad, friends and relatives. At the friendly, neighborhood campaign party, he said running for the City Council was a learning experience.
“It’s is a lot more complex than I thought,” Hutchison said. “I’m just learning about campaigning, advertising and how to brand myself. My biggest mistakes was not putting a statement on the ballot.”
But Hutchison said he learned about campaigning, and a lot of that came from his opponent in District 4, Benny Lee.
“I met Benny early and we became friends even though we were running against each other,” Hutchison said. “We talked every day.”
Hutchison, who works as a security manager for Target stores, said he also learned from former Mayor Tony Santos, who also supported Lee.
“He (Santos) taught me a lot about the city,” Hutchison said. “How finances work, how the city got to where it is today – the hospital, and school district issues.”
Despite the vote total, Hutchison seems optimistic about his role in politics and San Leandro’s future.
“So I plan on being back,” Hutchison said. “This won’t be the last time you’ve heard my name.”
