Thursday, December 6: Light Up the Season in Hayward

Hayward’s annual “Light Up the Season” festivities will be held from 5 to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow with holiday music, dancing groups, children’s rides, an ice-skating rink in City Hall Plaza and the lighting of the city’s Christmas tree. Thursday, December 6: School Board Meeting

The Castro Valley Board of Education will hold a regular meeting at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Dec. 6, at the District Office Board Room, 4400 Alma Avenue. It will include a public hearing on the appointment of Steve Ontiveros to the Personnel Commission.


Friday, December 7:Sing Noel” – a Christmas Celebration

The United Methodist Church of Castro Valley, at 19806 Wisteria St., presents “Sing Noel” at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 7. Suggested donation is $10. All proceeds benefit the Family Emergency Shelter Coalition.


Saturday, December 8: Join the Marines...for Coffee

All men and women veterans of the U.S. Marine Corps are invited to join with other Marines from all different times and duty stations for coffee and donuts at 9 a.m. this Saturday and on the second Saturday of every month at the Veterans Memorial Building, 1105 Bancroft Ave. in San Leandro, sponsored by the Lt. Saturday, December 8: “A Christmas Carol”

The Hayward Area Historical Society will present a unique telling of Charles Dickens’ timeless tale from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the Saturdays of Dec. 8, 15, and 22, at the McConaghy House, 18701 Hesperian Blvd., Hayward. Saturday, December 8: Alameda County Apps Challenge


A day-long hackathon will be held at the Castro Valley Library from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for competitors in the Alameda County Apps Challenge in which local residents will be challenged to create mobile and/or web apps that tap into a vast array of County public records. The winner will receive a $3,000 for the most creative and practical app of the day. Entry fee is $15. For info, visit


Saturday, December 8: Dusty Paws’ Santa Photo Day

Dusty Paws Rescue holds it annual “Santa Photo Day” fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday at Pet Food Express, 3385 Castro Valley Blvd. Bring the family, dogs, cats and kids to have pictures taken with Santa.


Saturday, December 8: Hearing Loss Assoc. Meeting

The Hearing Loss Association will hold its holiday potluck meeting at 9:30 a.m. this Saturday in the Kaiser Hospital Tower Room 1200-C, at Broadway and MacArthur in Oakland. Sunday, December 16: Annual Chanukah Celebration

Tri-Valley Cultural Jews will host their annual Chanukah Celebration from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 16 at the Bothwell Center, 2466 8th St. in Livermore. Fun for the whole family. Wednesday, December 19: Free Holiday Band Concert

The 60-piece Castro Valley Adult and Career Education Community Band under the direction of Kathy Maier, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 19, with selections that include “March of the Toys,” “Babes in Toyland,” “A Jingle Bell Fantasy,” “Felix Navidad,” and other pieces of the season, plus a sing-along. Refreshments will be served. No tickets are required.
