The boys of Cub Scout Pack 556 and 506 in San Leandro participated in “Scouting for Food” by going door-to-door collecting non-perishable food for local food banks.
“Scouting for Food” is the scouting community’s stewardship project aimed at addressing the problem of hunger in the community in which we live and work.
After a busy day of collecting the food, the very next day the Scouts volunteered at the Alameda County Community Food Bank. They sorted the food that they collected, as well as food collected by other Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers.
The boys and their adult chaperones were part of a group of almost 90 volunteers who sorted and packaged the food in boxes for needy families. The volunteers sorted more than 12,000 pounds of food and filled boxes totaling 9,000 meals.
