The Wizard of Oz at the Paramount
The Wizard of Oz, one of the best family films of all time, will be shown at the Paramount Theatre, 2025 Broadway in Oakland, on Friday, Dec. 28, at 8 p.m.. Admission is only $5 and tickets can be purchased at the Paramount Theatre Box Office, ticketmaster.com or by calling (800) 745-3000. All seats are general admission. The Paramount Box Office opens at 6 p.m. on the day of the shows.
The San Leandro Library Readers Roundtable book club will meet at the Main Library, 300 Estudillo Ave., on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. to discuss Swamplandia! by Karen Russell. Russell’s archetypal swamp saga tells a mystical yet rooted tale of innocents who come of age through trials of water, fire, and air.
Diabetes Support Group
The Diabetes Support Group will meet on Monday, Jan. 7, at 5 p.m. at the San Leandro Surgery Center, 15035 East 14th St. Brenda Yamashita from the Alameda County Diabetes Program will discuss updated diabetes care guidelines. Open to the public and admission is free.
Buon Tempo Club Spaghetti Dinner
The Buon Tempo Italian American Club is having an all-you-can-eat spaghetti and meatball dinner to benefit the American Cancer Society “Relay for Life” on Sunday, Jan. 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Castro Valley Moose Hall, 20835 Rutledge Road in Castro Valley. $15 per person ($10 child) includes salad, entree, and bread. Boys & Girls Club Crab Feed
The San Leandro Boys & Girls Club, 401 Marina Blvd., is having its annual Crab Feed on Saturday, Jan. 12. Social hour begins at 6 p.m and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person, which includes all-you-can-eat crab, pasta, salad and French bread. Live music by “BackBeat” performing the music of The Beatles. The event is assigned seating only. Proceeds support the San Leandro Boys & Girls Club, which provides educational and enrichment after-school programs for 1,200 children per day at twelve sites.
Join the Marines...for Coffee
Don’t be just a former Marine, join other Marines, past and present, once a month on the second Saturday (except in November) at 0900 hours at the Veterans Memorial Building, 1105 Bancroft Avenue, San Leandro, following the tradition of “Once a Marine, Always a Marine,” for coffee, doughnuts and friendship. San Leandro Toastmasters
The San Leandro Toastmasters meet every Thursday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the San Leandro Main Library, 300 Estudillo Ave. The local club is celebrating its 65th year. Toastmasters, a leader in communication and leadership development, is a learn-by-doing workshop where members hone their speaking skills in a no-pressure atmosphere. Members evaluate one another’s presentations and give impromptu talks on assigned topics. Guests are welcome. Come to improve your confidence in public speaking. It will help you in that job interview.
Hearing Loss Association
The Hearing Loss Association will meet on Saturday, Jan. 12, in the Kaiser Hospital Tower, Room 1200C, 280 W. MacArthur Blvd. in Oakland. Refreshments at 9:30 a.m., and the program runs from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Dr. Gil Magilen will discuss the challenges of severe hearing loss and a unique sound-engineering approach that results in improved hearing and speech understanding.
Jr. Warriors Youth Basketball
Junior Warriors Basketball is open to boys and girls 5-14 years of age. The 2013 season will be held on Saturdays from Jan. 12 to March 16. The program offers a non-competitive environment where beginners and veterans alike can improve their skills through weekly games and instruction. This program is co-sponsored by the Golden State Warriors, the NBA, WNBA and the City of San Leandro. Games will be played at Washington Manor Middle School and the San Leandro High School 9th Grade Campus. Sons of Norway Crab Feed
The Sons of Norway Snorre Lodge 6-061 is having its Annual Crab Feed on Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Hill & Valley Clubhouse, 1808 B St. in Hayward. Salad, spaghetti, garlic bread and crab, no-host bar, raffle prizes, music and dancing to the Sandbar Band. Giant Lego Display
A giant Lego display is on exhibit every Saturday and Sunday through Jan. 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Principled Academy, 2305 Washington Ave. in San Leandro. The display was made by Principled Academy students. For more information, call 351-6400.
The Bayfair Toastmasters are looking for new members. 4th Sunday Breakfast at Veterans Building
American Legion Post 117 will be offering breakfast from 8 a.m. until noon every 4th Sunday of the month at the San Leandro Veterans Memorial Bldg., 1105 Bancroft Ave. in San Leandro. The menu will be eggs-to-order, bacon/sausage, hash browns, toast and coffee. Cost is $6 for adults, $5 for senior and veterans, and $4 for children under 12. Everyone is welcome.
