On Christmas morning, over 400 kids received a new bicycle – courtesy of Santa Claus and San Leandro policeman Louis Brandt.
The bikes were handed out at the Davis Street Family Resource Center last Friday and the police joined the fire fighters and the volunteers at Davis Street to make it a nice Christmas for needy families in San Leandro.
About a thousand families came to the center last week for a bag of groceries. And the bikes went to families that won a computer lottery in the annual Bikes for Tykes program, sponsored by the San Leandro police.
Brandt collected $30,000 in donations from local businesses to pay for the bikes.
“If it wasn’t for the business owners and community leaders there’s no way we could have done this,” Brandt said.
The drive collected 385 bicycles, a hundred more bikes than last year, Brandt said.
“And another donor gave us another 40 bikes, so we have over 400 bicycles this year,” Brandt said.
Brandt also thanked the manager and employees at Walmart who spent the the time assembling all the bicycles.
