Castro Valley school teachers got some good news late last week. After 12 hours of  negotiations on Thursday, the school board approved a new contract giving teachers a 1 percent pay raise retroactive to July 1, and a one-time payout of 1.2 percent of their salary.

The agreement also assures that class sizes from kindergarten to third grade will stay at no more than 25 students per teachers through the 2014-15 school year, and it saves 18 positions that were to be eliminated.

“It’s our first raise since 2007 and allows teachers to at least tread water, economically,” said Castro Valley Teachers Union President John Green.

“We are very glad to have this done, and there will be something for teacher by February,” said Sherri Beetz, the school district’s assistant superintendent of human resources.
