Boys & Girls Club Crab Feed

The San Leandro Boys & Girls Club, 401 Marina Blvd., is having its annual Crab Feed on Saturday, Jan. 12. Social hour begins at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person, which includes all-you-can-eat crab, pasta, salad and French bread. Live music by “BackBeat” performing the music of The Beatles. The event is assigned seating only. To purchase tickets or for more information, call Bob Glotch at the Boys & Girls Club between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at 483-5581. Proceeds support the San Leandro Boys & Girls Club, which provides educational and enrichment after-school programs for 1,200 children per day at twelve sites.

Hearing Loss Association

The Hearing Loss Association will meet on Saturday, Jan. 12, in the Kaiser Hospital Tower, Room 1200-C, 280 W. MacArthur Blvd. in Oakland. Refreshments at 9:30 a.m., and the program runs from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Dr. Gil Magilen will discuss the challenges of severe hearing loss and a unique sound-engineering approach that results in improved hearing and speech understanding.

IDES Alvarado Street Crab Feed

The IDES of Alvarado Street (790 Antonio St. at the corner of  Alvarado) is having its annual crab feed on Saturday, Jan. 12, Social hour begins at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m Tickets are $40, which includes all-you-can-eat crab, salad, pasta and garlic bread. Hayward Eagles Luncheon and Bingo

The Hayward Eagles Auxiliary is having its monthly bingo luncheon on Monday Jan. 14 at noon at the Eagles Hall, 21406 Foothill Blvd., near I-580.  Hostess Maureen Kislingbury and her helpers will serve meatloaf, potatoes, vegetables, rolls and dessert.  The price of $7 includes a bingo card.  Raffle tickets are two for a dollar. The proceeds from this luncheon go to the Alzheimer charity.

Washington Homeowners Meeting

The Washington Homeowners and Residents Association will hold its monthly meeting this month at the Fargo Senior Center, 868 Fargo Ave., Bldg. C in San Leandro, on Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. If you would like to discuss any Manor concerns, call Marti Lantz, president at 351-8035 at least 24 hours before the meeting. All Washington Manor residents are urged to attend the meetings for discussions on city as well as local Manor issues.

Marina Faire Homeowners Meeting

The Marina Faire Homeowners Association will meet at the Marina Community Center, 15301 Wicks Blvd., on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. to discuss the future of the homeowners association. All residents in Marina Faire are encouraged to attend.

Alta Mira Club Crab Feed

The Alta Mira Club, 561 Lafayette Ave. in San Leandro, is having a crab feed on Saturday, Jan. 19. The social hour and drawings start at 5 p.m. and dinner begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $45. For tickets and reservations, call Carol Libbrecht at 305-5393.

Kiwanis Annual Crustacean Festation

The Kiwanis Club of San Leandro is having its annual Crustacean Festation crab feed on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the San Leandro Boys & Girls Club, 401 Marina Blvd. in San Leandro. The social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. and dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. with crab, salad, pasta and garlic bread. Dance from 8 to 10 p.m. to the music of Chico & the Band. Tickets are $40, or $20 for children under 10. Tickets available from San Leandro Kiwanis Club members or by calling Terri Neumann at 895-4425. Reserve early for group seating.

Discover Homeschool Spelling Bee

The Discovery Homeschool Spelling Bee will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 1 p.m. in Conference Room C at the San Leandro Main Library, 300 Estudillo Ave. The winner will advance to the preliminary round of the San Francisco Chronicle Spelling Bee. Spellers must be home schooled students, 14 years old or younger, and in the eighth grade or lower.  There will be a $10 registration fee per speller. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

The City of San Leandro will host the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration at the Marina Community Center, 15301 Wicks Blvd., on Monday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m. Student contestants will perform an original or well-known essay, speech or poem in celebration of King’s message of peace, tolerance and social justice. Prizes will be awarded in each age category, courtesy of the San Leandro Optimist Club. There will be entertainment, crafts for kids and light refreshments will be served.

Sons of Norway Crab Feed

The Sons of Norway Snorre Lodge 6-061 is having its Annual Crab Feed on Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Hill & Valley Clubhouse, 1808 B St. in Hayward. Salad, spaghetti, garlic bread and crab, no-host bar, raffle prizes, music and dancing to the Sandbar Band. Social hour at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m., dancing at 8 p.m. Tickets are $40, or $15 for children. Documentary Film on Gender Roles

The documentary film about the effect of homophobia on gender roles in high school will be shown on Friday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the San Leandro High Arts Education Center, 2200 Bancroft Ave. “Straight-laced – How Gender’s Got Us All Tied Up” by Academy Award-winning director Debra Chasnoff is a riveting and often funny film about gender roles and issues that affect us all. There will be a discussion after the movie and refreshments will be available. Everyone is welcome. Best for age 14 and older. St. Leander Church Valentine Crab Feed

St. Leander Church is having its annual crab feed on Saturday, Feb. 9, at Ryan O’Connell Hall, 575 W. Estudillo Ave., San Leandro.  Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.  Tickets are $40 per person which includes crab, pasta, salad, bread and dessert.  The event is “assigned seating only” and no outside beverages.  There will be a silent auction and sports memorabilia silent auction.  To purchase tickets or for more information, call the St. Leander Parish Office at 895-5631.  Last day to purchase tickets is Feb. 4.

Join the Marines...for Coffee

Don’t be just a former Marine, join other Marines, past and present, once a month on the second Saturday (except in November) at 0900 hours at the Veterans Memorial Building, 1105 Bancroft Avenue, San Leandro, following the tradition of “Once a Marine, Always a Marine,” for coffee, doughnuts and friendship.
