1. Sign at the Valero Station on the Boulevard at Stanton advertises $3 per gallon prices. 2. ...but the pumps tell a different story. 3. No attendant has been present during a number of checks of the location.

The sign out front advertises gasoline at $3 a gallon, regardless of the grade, but that’s not ----what you’ll pay at the self-service station at Stanton Ave. and Castro Valley Blvd.

The actual prices, posted on its pumps last week, were $3.76, $3.85 and $3.95, rounded off to the nearest cent. That’s quite a bit higher than the average prices at most stations in Castro Valley.

So who can you complain to? Apparently nobody. No attendant was on duty at the 2504 Castro Valley Blvd. Valero station when the Forum checked the location several times last week.

Calls to the station’s owner, Thrifty Oil Company of Santa Fe Springs in Southern California, were not returned. Bill Day, a Valero representative, said the Castro Valley location is one with a so-called “branding agreement” with his company, which does nothing more than supply gasoline to the location.

The station has been shut down for the past few years. About a month ago, the ever-present cyclone fence surrounding the site was removed and the wooden slats encasing the pumps came down.
