Two 7th/8th-grade boys teams from South Fremont came to play their National Junior Basketball game at Castro Valley High School Sunday with the Castro Valley teams winning the games 69-49 and 47-41.
Coach Silva’s team played first, competing and winning throughout the game, although the other team managed to stay within 5 points. CV didn’t start to take over until midway through the fourth quarter, when Tommy Slakey had some timely steals, leading to fast break points.
As a unit, the CV team kept getting defensive stops. This led to two consecutive 6-0 runs, and by the fifth quarter, the CV team had the game in hand, winning 69-49.
Anthony Silva led all scorers with 28 points and Tommy Slakey followed with 17 points, 5 steals, and 5 assists.
In the second game, Coach Kautz’s team played against a South Fremont team in close competition that wasn’t decided until the last three minutes of the fifth quarter, when CV pulled away with a 47-41 win.
Brahim Diop led his team with a double-double, 14 points and 11 rebounds, many of which were on the defensive side, limiting second chance baskets.
Diop was a beast in the middle bringing down rebound after rebound, but he also had help from his teammates offensively and defensively. All the members of the team hustled and played some hard defense and offensively Red Kautz III had 9 points, Daniel Gutierrez had 8 points, and bot Nathan Wong and Austin Myatt added 6 points.
