San Lorenzo High forward Ali Farugbey drove in for a layup in the fourth period to cut the lead to one point against San Leandro on Friday night, but the Pirates held off the Rebel rally.
San Leandro (13-4) kept cool under pressure on the Rebels home court and walked away with a 63-56 win.
“I have faith in my team,” said San Leandro guard Dejon Budreaux. “We practice that every day, making free throws and playing under pressure.”
Budreaux led the game with 21 points. He played well on defense, too, with five steals and seven rebounds.
Budreaux also made several assists, feeding the ball in to forwards Stephen Johnson and Osi Nwachuke, helping Johnson score 8 points in the game.
Ishmail Ali scored 11 points, Kimini Hall scored 10, and Kennon Noble scored 8.
Strong forward Osi Nwachuke scored two points, but his strong suit was denying San Lorenzo baskets by blocking five shots with his long arms.
“Osi has a long reach,” said San Leandro coach Sean MacKay.
The Pirates had their hands full trying to contain the Rebels (10-7), especially Faraugbey who connected from 3-point range, as well as driving to the basket. If Farugbey finds an opening, he’ll dart in for the layup, so anytime he has the ball the opposing team better be on their toes.
San Leandro will host Piedmont on Friday night at 7 p.m., and travel to Hayward next Tuesday for a game at 7 p.m. San Lorenzo will travel to crosstown rival Arroyo for a game on Friday at 7 p.m.
