Over the last week, traffic stops have led to the recovery of three illegal handguns – bringing the total number of guns found that way to six this month.
On Jan. 15 at around 6:45 p.m., an officer pulled over a car for a violation on Lewelling Boulevard, near Tropic Court. The officer found the driver, a 37-year-old Oakland man, with an illegal unloaded firearm and placed him under arrest.
On. Jan. 18 at around 9:30 p.m., police pulled over a man for a driving violation on Springlake Drive, according to Lt. Jeff Tudor of the San Leandro police. The driver, a 28-year-old Fresno man, had an outstanding warrant and police searched his car, finding a loaded .45 caliber gun on the front seat.
On Jan. 19 at around 10:30 p.m., an officer pulled over an SUV in the parking lot of 555 Bancroft Avenue, Tudor said.
When the cop tried to stop the SUV, two men ran out of the vehicle. The officer saw one of the runners reach for something in his waistband. That suspect was caught a short time later on Dutton Avenue. The other suspect got away.
The suspect who was caught was identified as an 18-year-old Oakland man. Officers searched the area and found a loaded gun in some bushes near where the incident first took place.
