Bay Bridge to Sparkle in March | Print |  E-mail

When “The Bay Lights” debuts at 9 p.m. on March 5, the artwork will represent far more than the logistical achievement of stringing 25,000 LED bulbs along nearly 5 miles’ of vertical suspension cables. The $8-million privately funded piece, which will illuminate the nearly two miles of the western span nightly for the next two years, is the most ambitious project yet by the critically acclaimed Manhattan-based artist Leo Villareal. A key aspect of The Bay Lights will be that the never-repeating patterns made by the flashing nodes have been shaped by their environment  – the fog, the wind, and the waves. In creating those variables, Villareal looks to the bridge and the Bay, for inspiration: “We have this monumental structure of the American sublime, this beautiful framework. The piece becomes a mirror of its surroundings.” For a video, visit
