Art Show at San Leandro High

There will be a reception for the National Advanced Placement Studio Art Show on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the lobby gallery of the San Leandro High Arts Education Center, 2200 Bancroft Ave. This is the only West Coast exhibition of these beautiful works of art. Cellist to Perform at Vine & Tapas

Classical cellist Mariah Mitchell-Mellor will  play at The Vine & Tapas, 101 Parrot St. in downtown in San Leandro, on Friday, Feb. 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. The concert is a part of string of performances to finance touring with the Oakland Youth Orchestra this summer in Argentina. Mitchell-Mellor, a 16 year old San Leandran, performs frequently as a soloist and ensemble musician. She is looking forward to playing for her hometown audience for the first time as a solo cellist.

Documentary Film on Gender Roles

The documentary film about the effect of homophobia on gender roles in high school will be shown on Friday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the San Leandro High Arts Education Center, 2200 Bancroft Ave. “Straight-laced – How Gender’s Got Us All Tied Up” by Academy Award-winning director Debra Chasnoff is a riveting and often funny film about gender roles and issues. There will be a discussion after the movie and refreshments will be available. Everyone is welcome. Best for age 14 and older. Readers’ Roundtable

The San Leandro Library Readers’ Roundtable book club will meet at the Main Library, 300 Estudillo Ave., on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 1 p.m. to discuss The Big Read selection, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. A true literary wonder, Hurston’s masterwork remains as relevant and affecting today as when it was first published.

Arroyo Boosters Annual Crab Feed

Arroyo Athletic Booster Club’s 33rd Annual Crab Feed will be on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the San Leandro Boys & Girls Club, 401 Marina Blvd. Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $40, which includes all-you-can-eat salad, pasta, bread, and crab, along with dancing, full bar and a raffle. Big Read Kickoff at Manor Library

The 2013 Big Read will kick off on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the Manor Branch Library, 1241 Manor Blvd. The San Leandro Library has picked Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston as this year’s novel. The Manor kickoff features storyteller Muriel Johnson who will enthrall listeners with songs and folk tales from various parts of the African continent. At the conclusion of the program, all adults are invited to register for a book discussion group and receive a free copy of Hurston’s novel (while supplies last). Refreshments served. The program is free and no registration is required.

Ohlone Audubon Meeting

Girls Leadership

Simone Marean, co-founder of the Girls Leadership Institute, will speak on Wednesday, Feb. 6, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Bancroft Middle School, 1150 Bancroft Ave., co-sponsored by the Roosevelt and Bancroft PTAs. Simone will share how to help girls practice assertive self-expression, emotional intelligence and healthy relationships, preparing them for a life of leadership, and the problem of pushing girls to maintain a “perfect girl” image. Parkinson’s Support Group

The San Leandro Parkinson’s Support Group will meet on Thursday, Feb. 7, at the San Lorenzo Community Church, 745 Paseo Grande in San Lorenzo. Exercise at 10 a.m. and the meeting begins at 10:30 a.m. with an open discussion.

Teen Talent Show

See the best of local teen talent at the San Leandro’s Got Talent show on Friday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. at the San Leandro Main Library. Tickets are on sale  at San Leandro Main Library (300 Estudillo Avenue) and the Recreation and Human Services Department South Offices (835 East 14th Street). Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for youth, 17 and under. Light refreshments will be sold during intermission and there will be a raffle for great prizes.

St. Leander Church Valentine Crab Feed

St. Leander Church is having its annual crab feed on Saturday, Feb. 9, at Ryan O’Connell Hall, 575 W. Estudillo Ave., San Leandro. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.  Tickets are $40 per person which includes crab, pasta, salad, bread and dessert.  The event is “assigned seating only” and no outside beverages. There will be a silent auction and sports memorabilia silent auction.  To purchase tickets or for more information, call the St. Leander Parish Office at 895-5631.  Last day to purchase tickets is Feb. 4.

Hearing Loss Association Meeting

The Hearing Loss Association will meet at Kaiser Hospital, 280 W. MacArthur Blvd. in Oakland, on Saturday, Feb. 9. Refreshments at 9:30 a.m. and the program is from 10 to 11:30 a.m., “Living with a Cochlear Implant.” This month only the meeting will be held in Rm.G27 of the Fabiola building.

Art Demonstration by Edward Burton

Award winning artist Edward Burton will do an art demonstration at the San Leandro Art Association meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. at the San Leandro Main Library, 300 Estudillo Ave. Admission is free.

Valentine’s Day at the Senior Center

Share a delicious “heart-y” lunch prepared by Chef Rick, enjoy fun games, raffle prizes and more at the Valentine’s Day party on Thursday, Feb. 14, from noon to 2 p.m. at the San Leandro Senior Community Center,  13909 East 14th St. Remember to wear red or pink.
