He retired from the San Francisco Chronicle and National Fabtronics. At his request, no services were held.

CHRISTOPHER, Kyriacos “Louie,” of San Leandro, passed away suddenly in Burlingame on Thursday, January 31, 2013, at age 68. He was a native of Cypru. Services were held Feb. 4 at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Oakland.

GATES, Maria Alice (1966 – 2013) of Castro Valley passed away on February 2, 2013, after a long, courageous battle with breast cancer. She was surrounded by her family and loved ones. This remarkable woman, wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend was  born in Lisbon, Portugal and came to the United States with her family in 1970 — first settling in Boston and then coming to San Leandro in 1980. She was a 1985 graduate of San Leandro High School and attended Chabot Junior College. Maria, or Alice as many knew her by, lived her life with grace and beauty, touching the hearts of all she met. Her love for her husband, Mark Gates, and her children, Jenna and Jacob Gates, was the passion and driving force in her life. She was an extraordinary wife and mother — spending her time working on school projects, going to the childrens’ many sporting events, and teaching them how to live life with humor, honesty and kindness. Alice was devoted to her friends — being the first to offer help when needed, encouragement when those around her were struggling, support when they needed strength, and laughter when they experienced sorrow. It was this same devotion and approach to life that sustained her during her long illness. Her strength, faith and love never faltered. She taught us all the meaning of those words. Alice was a planner and organizer. She built this into a career, starting at age 15 as a part-time teller for American Savings and Loan in San Leandro. She continued her employment in the banking industry with positions at Citibank in San Francisco, and most recently as Facilities Manager for Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco and Oakland, where she worked until 2011. Alice was predeceased by her beloved father, Diamantino Fernandes. She is survived by her husband, Mark Gates; her children, Jenna and Jacob Gates; her mother, Alice Fernandes; her sister, Rosa Panelli; brother-in-law, Tony Panelli; niece, Lindsay Panelli; and many other dear and life-long friends. Friends and family are invited to join us for visitation on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 6 p.m., followed by Mass at 7 p.m. at St. Leander Church, 550 W. Estudillo Ave., in San Leandro. Burial will be Friday, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m. at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 1051 Harder Road, in Hayward. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the college fund established for Alice’s children, Jenna and Jacob Gates, at any Wells Fargo Bank (Account #1367667340). The family thanks Hayward Hospice and the doctors and nurses at Kaiser Permanente Oncology Dept. in Hayward for their support and care.
