San Leandro Times
The San Leandro High wrestling team won the league championship by beating Castro Valley last Wednesday.
San Leandro is co-champion of the West Alameda County Conference (WACC) after a 40-39 win over Castro Valley — the perennial league leader for the past decade. The dual-meet season ended in a tie between San Leandro, Castro Valley and Albany.
San Leandro is 6-1 for the season with the one loss at the hands of Albany. Castro Valley beat Albany, and San Leandro beat Castro Valley, resulting in the 3-way tie.
“Everybody kind of fed off his energy,” said Pirates wrestling coach David Jagoda. “Travis started us off with a big, unexpected win by a pin. Beating Castro Valley’s best guy created a lot of momentum for the team.”
San Leandro had another dramatic victory in the 108-pound weight class when Kevin Yi, a freshman, pinned a senior from Castro Valley, Cody Brazil.
And San Leandro wrestler Darren Nguyen moved up a weight class and won by a major decision (8 or more points) for an extra point in the team score.
That extra point proved to be beneficial.
“Everybody’s match was incredibly important to beat Castro Valley 40-39,” Jagoda said. “So it really came down to the last match.”
Another top wrestler on the team is Darren Nguyen, who took fifth at the Mission San Jose tournament, beating some of the best wrestlers in the state.
Travis Pol hopes to continue wrestling at a Division 1 college and be a nutritionist some day. The senior decided to join the wrestling team in his freshman year when he saw the team practicing.
“I was a freshman and I saw some guys wrestling in here,” Pol said. “And I decided I want to be like that some day.”
