DIAZ, Raymond Charles, of San Leandro, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at age 80. A native of San Leandro, Ray worked for 38 years at Umphreds Furniture in San Leandro. He was preceded in death by his daughter Joann. He is survived by his wife Margie of 55 years, his daughter Karen, his sons Allan (Lori) and Loren (Jacqui) and 8 grand children. Visitation will be held on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. followed by a Service at 3 p.m., all at San Leandro (Guerrero) Funeral Home, 407 Estudillo Ave., in San Leandro. DUNCAN, James (Jim), of San Leandro, 79, passed away in his home February 3, 2013, after a battle with cancer. Jim graduated from San Leandro High School and, at 17, joined the Air Force. He was stationed in England where he met his bride, Lily. Jim was an avid SF Giants and 49ers fan. He loved youth baseball and enjoyed mens softball as he managed many teams and even continued playing well into his later years. Jim also loved to travel. He is survived by his wife, Lily, of 56 years; children, Desiree (Tim), Michael (Josi), Lisa (Rick), and Kristy; grandchildren, Justin (Angelica), Eric, Cody, Dylan and Jamie; great-granddaughter, Chloe; sister, Maryann Jensen; and many nieces and nephews.
FERNANDES, Ludlow “Lud,” of San Lorenzo, passed away at his home on Friday, February 8, 2013, after a long battle with Alzheimers. He was 84. A native of Oakland, Mr. Fernandes served in the Air National Guard from 1951-53, and worked for Teamsters Local 70 for 43 years. At his request, no services were held.
FERREIRA, Tony F., a resident of San Leandro, passed away at his home on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at the age of 94. Born in Maui in 1918 before making his home in San Leandro for 93 years. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Josephine; daughter, Jeri, and her husband, Floyd; son Alan, and his wife, Melinda; 4 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. Tony retired from American Can Co. in Oakland and served in the Army in WWII. Private family services will be held. FIELD, Beverly Eileen, of San Leandro, passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2013, after a brief illness. She was 91. A native of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Mrs. Field was a longtime member of the Alta Mira Club and a pianistd at many civic events.
GALERIA, Betty, of San Leandro, passed away at her home on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at age 86. A native of San Francisco, Mrs. Galeria was a lifetime resident of Alameda County. Services were held Feb. 11 at the LDS Church in San Leandro.
HANSON, Charlotte Ruth, of San Leandro, passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2013, at age 77. A native of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Ms.Hanson was a longtime Registered Nurse at Fairmont Hospital who was active in PTA and Girl Scouts. A memorial will be held in late spring.
KEREZSI, Gerald “Jerry,” of San Leandro, passed away on Dec. 25, 2012, at age 74. A native of Trenton, New Jersey, Mr. Kerezsi was a U.S. Navy veteran who woked at World Airways for eight years and was an AC Transit bus driver for 26 years. Funeral arrangements were made by the Neptune Society.
LONG, James “Jim” Elbert Alonzo, 89, entered into this life on August 11, 1923. He entered into eternal life on February 6, 2013 surrounded by his daughters. Jim was the middle of five children born to Elbert and Huldah Long and made his home in Oakland until he joined the Navy and married Alberta Richardson in 1943. Jim was honorably discharged in 1945 and, in 1946, he and Alberta moved to San Leandro. There, they raised four children: James, Joyce (Pat) Sharpe, and Janice and Jill (Phil) Maughan. Jim worked for Fridens Calculation Machine Co. in San Leandro for many years and went on to open his own business — Longs T.V. Sales & Repair. Later, Jim took a job with the Hayward Unified School District where he happily worked until he retired in 1988. Over the years, Jim and Alberta were blessed with four grandchildren: James Jr., Amie (Chris) Roberts, Rhonda (Dan) Whent and Wendy (Glen) Thornell. Their grandchildren continued to bless Jim’s life with five great-grandchildren: Sophia, Sabreena and Calista Roberts, Hannah Whent, and Oliver Thornell. Jim lost his wife, Alberta, in 1990 and, in 2000, he moved to Gerber, California. Jim had many interests throughout his life, including HAM Radio operator, carpentry, fishing, gardening, cooking and bowling. Jim was very generous and often shared the fruits of his labor with friends and neighbors. There will be a celebration of Jim’s life on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 11:30 a.m. at the El Camino Community United Methodist Church, 8345 Highway 99 West, Gerber, CA. 96035, with reception to follow.
ROMERO, Severo Lorenzo, of San Lorenzo, passed away on Monday, January 28, 2013, at age 89. A native of Taos, New Mexico, Mr. Romero was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and worked at the Oakland Naval Supply Center and the Alameda Naval Air Station for a total of 37 years.
RUNYON, Carl, of San Leandro, passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2013, at age 59. Mr. Runyon worked for NUMMI for 34 years. A memorial was held Feb. 13 at Grissom’s Chapel Mortuary in San Lorenzo.
SWEENEY, Bernice C., passed away on Friday, February 8, 2013, at age 92.
