Deer Valley guard Kendall Smith scored 27 points to lead the Wolverines to a 73-65 win over San Leandro on Friday night to take the North Coast Section Division I title.
The Pirates closed the gap to 7 points in the fourth period with guard Dejon Budreaux leading the charge in front of a big crowd for the NCS championship game played at St. Mary’s College in Moraga.
The loss was a setback, but San Leandro still remained in the hunt in the Nor-Cal playoffs, hosting Bethel High of Vallejo on Wednesday (last night). The result of that game was too late for this week’s newspaper deadline.
Deer Valley got a bye in the first round of the Nor-Cal playoffs by winning the NCS title on Friday night against San Leandro. The Wolverines got the ball to their big center, Marcus Lee, in the paint. The 6-foot-10 Lee knocked down 22 points.
But Deer Valley guard Kendall Smith was the real terror on the court, leading the game in scoring with 27 points.
Smith scored on layups, tip-ins and jump shots from long range. He was just all over the place, and sank two 3-point shots.
San Leandro guard Ishmail Ali also sank a couple of 3-pointers and finished the game with 18 points. Pirates guard Dejon Budreaux led San Leandro in scoring with 19 points.
The Pirates stayed right on the heels of the Wolverines, keeping the fans on edge through most of the game.
San Leandro closed the gap to 34-31 in the second period after Budreaux sank a 3-pointer and then Kimini Hall nailed a jumper for two. Hall finished the game with 7 points.
San Leandro guard Kennon Noble was another big part of the Pirates attack on Friday night with 11 points. Forward Osi Nwachuke scored 8 points and Stephen Johnson added 2 points.
“It was a very tough game,” said Budreaux. “But this season has been a great experience.”
