GASPARI, Antonio “Joe,” April 18, 1923 – January 20, 2014 • We lost Joe, a kind and gentle spirit, after a long, difficult illness. He was a strong, brave, wise man… simple and honest, by way of grace. He was born to Nellie and Tony Gaspari in Cle Elum, Washington. Joe grew up in Oakland and Alameda. He and his wife, Charlotte, were married in 1950 and, in 1956, they moved to San Leandro. Joe lived there, in the same home, until his illness in 2010. He was a longtime employee of, and retired from, UC Berkeley. Those of you who knew Joe are aware of his many illnesses, but through it all, and without complaint, he endured… and the magic happened. Literally and figuratively, he was known for his magic tricks and jokes; for his awe-inspiring skill set, craftsmanship and creativity. From making sail boats, sewing the sails by hand, to building black powder guns from a block of wood, to making a mean batch of cioppino or chili beans — there wasn’t anything Joe couldn’t do. He made rings out of dollar bills which he lovingly gave away. His neighbor Janice told him, “Because of that ring, I will never be poor.” Joe was a music lover, especially the jazz singers; Dinah Washington was “his girl!” He taught himself to play guitar and ukelele. Joe also grew up with and loved animals, and our Golden Retriever, Sophie, was his best friend. Joe lost Charlotte in 2012, and many other loving family members before and since. He is survived by his brother, Frank Gaspari, for whom he held a sacred place in his heart. He is also survived by his daughter, Lisa Gaspari-Salmon, who loved him more than words can say… and the feeling was mutual; and his grand dogs, Jaco, Winona and Pearl. Also surviving is his son-in-law, Dr. Enrique Salmon, who is now the guardian of Joe’s tools and machinery, and creates his own treasures in Joe’s honor; sister-in-law, Peggy Gaspari; nephew, Greg Adams (Anne), who was a loving and devoted nephew; and many other relatives and friends who meant the world to him. Joe was blessed to be in the loving care of the staff at St. Christopher Care Center in Hayward. He was treated with respect, dignity, kindness and love by everyone in their realm and who gladly took him under their wing. Our family will be forever grateful to these angels on earth. Finally, if you happen to be walking by a dog, especially a Golden Retriever, if it will allow, perhaps give it a little pet or a hug… for Joe. There will be no services; however, contributions can be made in Joe’s memory to Guide Dogs for the Blind, Attn: Donations Department, P.O. Box 151200, San Rafael, CA 94915-1200.
