MILLER, Robert Steven, passed away on June 10, 2015 at the age of 57. Rob was born on September 10, 1957 and was raised in San Leandro. He is survived by his mother, Sharon Lipka Miller of Castro Valley; his daughters, Amber Miller of Brentwood and Lindsey Miller of Arizona; and his beloved dog, Onie, a Belgian Malinois. Rob has 3 grandsons, Jesiah, Brayden and Judah. He is also survived by an older brother, Mark Miller of San Leandro; and 2 younger sisters, Victoria Miller of Castro Valley and Kassandra Miller of San Leandro; nieces and nephews; his loving Aunt Nancy Leavitt of Alameda; and an uncle, aunts and cousins. Rob’s father, Robert Edwin Miller, predeceased him in June of 2004. In 1971, at the age of 14, Rob had open heart surgery at Children’s Hospital in Oakland to correct an aortic stenosis. He was very proud of the scar from that surgery and was the terror of the halls in the hospital. In 1987, he had another successful open heart surgery to implant a mechanical aortic valve, which, if you listened closely, you could hear his valve ticking, like a Timex watch. Rob was a journeyman machinist for 37 years at the family business, Allied Engineering & Production Corp. in Alameda, and was currently a journeyman machinist at Unico Mechanical, located in Benicia. Over the years, Rob had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of diverse projects, for both public and private sector customers, and he took extreme pride in the work he produced. Rob grew up house-boating with his family and many friends at Lake Don Pedro, and he loved camping and taking his jeep on 4-wheeling and rock-crawling trips to the Rubicon, the Sierra Trek and Lions Back in Moab, Utah. He was currently living on his yacht at Mariner’s Square in Alameda, which he loved to take out on the bay for relaxing cruises. Rob was an enthusiastic photographer and loved to take pictures of any subject, but mostly his family, sunsets and the Blue Angels when they would be in San Francisco for Fleet Week. Rob had a very patriotic attitude… he would recite the Pledge of Allegiance every day and was passionate about everything American and Red, White and Blue! A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday evening, July 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1323 Central Ave., in Alameda. In lieu of flowers, Rob and his family would prefer donations to Children’s Hospital Oakland, http://give.ucsfbenioffchildrens.org or envelopes will be available at the service.

Mary grew up on a farm in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Montana in Ferndale, near Bigfork. Her parents were the late Donald Penney and Mabel Johnson Penney. LOUX, Robert (Bob) Raymond III, slipped gently from this world on April 24, 2015 in San Leandro after a long, full and wonderful life. Bob was born on September 25, 1921 to Robert II (Doc) and Myrtle Loux in Hibbing, Minnesota. A natural athlete from his earliest years, Bob excelled in football, basketball and track throughout high school. His athletic and college pursuits were interrupted by WWII during which he served as a 2nd Lieutenant Naval Pilot and member of the original “Fab Five” flying squad along with fellow Marines, Putnam, Renning, Hamilton and Demspter. It is a measure of Bob’s lifelong generosity and spirit of always putting those he loved before himself that he used his GI Bill benefit to buy his parents their first home. At the close of the war, Bob went on to pursue a teaching degree at Bemidji State College where he met and married his wife of 52 years, fellow student Gladys (Chub) Loux. He then embarked on a teaching and athletic coaching career, serving in this capacity at Fergus Falls High School and later at the Pillsbury Military Academy in Owatonna, Minnesota. With a new family on the way, Bob sought new employment opportunities in the field of Research and Development with Dow International and was subsequently recruited by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. There, he applied his teaching and R&D skills to his 35-year-long career with the AEC in training and contract management. He and Chub eventually settled in Boulder City, Nevada where they were extremely active in their community, Bob serving as a community leader and a founding member of the BC Men’s Golf Club and Chub as president of the BC Women’s Golf Association. Both are credited as having played major roles in the design, planning and construction of BC’s first golf course. Though rightfully proud of his highly successful career, and community and military service, it was his family and multitude of friends that Bob held most dear. His children and grandchildren, always his greatest source of pride, will miss him beyond measure. Bob’s pride in his family was well founded. His son, Steve, a master carpenter and cabinet maker, designer and builder of custom homes, accomplished musician and gourmet chef, lives in Spokane, Washington with his wife Jan.  His second son, Bob Loux IIII, shares Bob Sr.’s love of athletics and teaching, playing football and basketball throughout his high school and college years, and teaching in the Nevada school system prior to his 30-year career as Director of the Nevada Office of Nuclear Projects. Bob lives with his wife, Donny, in Dayton, Nevada, and is still playing golf. His third son, Tom, who passed away last year, was a gifted and innovative computer programmer, who, during his career, numbered many consultancies for Disneyland, Porsche, Microsoft, Venetian/China, and the State of Nevada (Y2K Project) among his accomplishments. Tom, also a talented photographer and woodworker, is survived by his wife, Sally, living in Reno, Nevada, and children, Ryan and Julie. The grandkids — Ryan, a successful civil engineer living in Boston (and Bob’s favorite sports-betting partner), Julie, who followed Bob’s passion for teaching and is pursuing a career in Special Education in Reno, and Miles, who is working in the warehousing industry also in Reno — were his heart. There can be no doubt that beautiful Brooklyn, brand-new daughter to Julie and her husband, Greg, and first great-granddaughter to Bob, has wonderful footsteps to follow. Each of the children and grandchildren will tell you that their accomplishments were, in large measure, guided by the love, support and counsel received from “Bob Sr.” Each consider their own accomplishments to be his. After the passage of his wife, Chub, Bob became reacquainted with friend Gloria Baff of San Leandro, whose husband had passed in previous years. They fell deeply in love and, after a long courtship, Bob moved to San Leandro and married Gloria in 2005. Bob was already experienced in blending families and grandchildren through Bob Jr’s marriage to Donny, with kids Tony, Niki and Brett. With Gloria came 4 new adult children: Cathy, Jim, Elizabeth and Rosemary; and 5 new grandkids to be proud of — Ian, Corey, Jennifer, Christina and Shannon. Bob’s capacity for support and encouragement was immediately expanded to include his new brood — all of whom love and cherish him as their own. His pride in the “new kids” grew as well with Ian pursuing an engineering degree from Texas A&M, Corey majoring in Music Education at New Mexico State, “Shann” studying Theatre at University of New Mexico, Christina an artist, housewife and mother, and Jennifer having graduated from Texas State and enjoying a successful career in Human Resources. Bob touched the lives of everyone he met, and gained many new and wonderful friends in San Leandro. Among them Gloria’s sister, Sylvia, with whom he golfed regularly, and her friend, Wendy, with whom he shared Wednesday night “Date Nites” for dinner out. For the last decade of his life, the four of them, often with friends, traveled extensively — visiting children in far-flung places, driving to Palm Springs four or five times a year, flying to Hawaii every spring, Tahoe every summer, and cruising Alaska, the Caribbean and the Mexican Riviera. Between these, they sandwiched in many day trips to the Wine Country and up the coast to Half Moon Bay. In their down time, Bob, an avid gardener, tended to his roses while Gloria changed the gardens to match the seasons. Bob enjoyed attending events of the San Leandro Colombo Club, especially those planned by Gloria and Sylvia, who are active members. Bob loved old movies, Frank Sinatra and football but seldom managed to beat grandson Ryan in a bet though he made up many losses with Bob Jr. Bob was a regular at the gym and considered Walt (his personal trainer and gym owner) among his many great friends. Bob’s family and friends may often differ on politics, religion and world affairs but none differ on their central view of Bob: If you knew Bob, you loved Bob, and you never forgot him. In accordance with Bob’s wishes, there will be no formal service. A celebration of his life will be held by the family at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 1, at 677 Estudillo Ave. in San Leandro.
