RODRIGUEZ, Narcissa (Nottie), April 29, 1914 – April 19, 2013, a resident of San Leandro, passed away on April 19 after a brief illness. Our mother’s strength, love and passion brings us comfort as we say our earthly good-byes. Her greatest joy was her family. Her most treasured moments were when she was surrounded by her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She passed away leaving us to cherish memories of her unconditional love, sense of family, and inner beauty that drew people to her throughout her 98 years. For many, she set a standard for what a friend should be, and we all are richer having known her. Her easy laugh and quick smile allowed her to make friends easily and endear herself to even casual acquaintances — truly a unique gift. She served the community as the wife of San Leandro’s Fire Chief Manual Rodriguez (1953-1973) and was equally at ease with government officials, state dignitaries and her childhood friends which she cherished. She traveled extensively with her husband during their 50 years together, across 50 states, parts of the Caribbean Islands and over much of Western Europe. After being widowed at age 71, she devoted herself to her children and their families, often traveling to watch her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s athletic events and other milestones in family members’ lives. Her memory keepers and the loves of her life include daughter, Janice Seeley, and her husband, Bob; son, Don, and his wife, Rhonda; daughter-in-law, Mary; grandchildren, Randy, Renee, Matthew, Leah, Rachel, Kevin and Jeff; great-grandchildren, Max, Heather, Camryn, Amelia, Mateo and Elias were always in her thoughts and her concern for everyone continued right up through the end of her life. She also leaves a life-long friend in her sister-in-law, Marie Mallard, and several dear nieces and nephews. Eager to greet her in her heavenly life are those that have passed before her, especially her beloved husband, Manuel, and son, Ron. We will celebrate her life at 11 a.m. on Sunday May 19, at the home of Mary Rodriguez, 570 Glen Dr., in San Leandro. Arrangements made by Santos-Robinson Mortuary in San Leandro (510-483-0123, www.santos-robinson.com).

Celie is survived by her husband, Howie Brett; her two sons, Richard and Buddy; and her daughters-in-law, Alice Brett and Mary Jo Knueven. Celie loved life and enjoyed it immensely. “Wow!” was her favorite joyous word. She loved being with Howie and her sons, relishing many parties and dinners. She also loved shopping, camping, baseball, buying lottery tickets, and she never voted for a Republican. Celie’s sweetness and kindness made everyone who met her a friend. On her 90th birthday, Celie had everyone sing “Amazing Grace” — that is how she saw her long life. One of her favorite quotes was: “Hope perches in the soul and sings there, and never stops at all.” The amazing grace of her life was filled with hope and sings in the heart of her family. We are profoundly grateful for Celie Brett — beautiful in spirit, love and looks. The family requests donations in her memory to the VITAS Community Connection, c/o VITAS Hospice, 670 McCarthy Blvd., Suite 220, Milpitas, CA 95035. She was widely known in the Washington Manor neighborhood as the “lady in blue,” because of the blue jogging suit she always wore when she walked.
