She grew up in Illinois, except for her high school years which were spent in Panama City, Florida, where her parents moved to run a bar owned by a family member. When they returned to Illinois, she received university degrees in both Illinois and Iowa. June was a consummate athlete, excelling at all sports. She joined her first women’s softball league when she was only 13 years old. She managed a roller-skating rink to work her way through college, while also playing basketball, hockey and softball. After college, she began teaching in Illinois. And, in 1949, she signed a contract with the National Women’s Softball League, playing for the Chicago Queens, and subsequently many other teams. During the summer months, she and her team traveled around the country playing against other women’s teams. These were exciting years for these young women who got to experience a world unknown to most women of their time, as exemplified in the movie “A League of Their Own.” Arriving in California in 1953, she first taught at the old Hayward High School for three years before moving to Arroyo High School in 1956. There, she was responsible for innovative activities such as co-ed roller-skating, archery, swimming, golf and trampoline. During the 1960s, she was part of the staff that made the Arroyo PE Department a California Demonstration School Program. She was excellent at developing activities for the Special Ed disabled students. Very respected and popular with her students, she had that special connection of acceptance and encouragement so often needed. It did not matter whether you had two left feet or were a gifted athlete, ALL were included and felt wanted and respected by “Miss Mac.” During this time, June also regained her amateur status and was a star first baseman for the Redwood City Jets softball team. She was an excellent bowler and played very good golf — activities she continued through her adult life. She was a member of the Lake Chabot, Willow Park and Alameda women’s golf clubs; and, for a time, was an officer in the Pacific Women’s Golf Association. She was an animal lover who loved her Chihuahuas. She rescued feral cats, and once saved a pregnant deer from drowning in a neighbor’s swimming pool. Mac could be a hardheaded, stubborn woman. She loved to win, but she also knew how to lose with grace. You put up a good hard fight, Mac, and went out a winner. You were loved and you will be missed.
