VLAHOS, Georgia — In loving memory of Georgia Vlahos (Miss Vlahos), a lifelong resident of San Leandro, she was granted angel wings on August 15, 2014. Georgia fought a valiant battle with cancer for over 17 years. She was born in San Leandro, the youngest daughter of Mike and Antonia Vlahos, owners of Blue Bird Sweet Shop and then Plaza Tavern in San Leandro. She graduated from San Leandro High School in 1961 and then attended Cal-State Hayward as a Speech/Drama major with an English minor. In the summer of 1968, she arrived at St. Joseph’s Boys High School to interview for her first teaching job. She was to become the speech teacher and coach the debate team. With interest in debate waning, she focused her talents in Drama and directed many plays and taught English at St. Joseph Notre Dame. Soon she realized she was spending more time helping students with personal problems so she returned to school to complete her Master’s Degree in Counseling. She was a teacher and counselor, dearly loved and appreciated by her students. She taught at St. Josephs’ Notre Dame for 38 years (1968-2006). She said, “Laughter is what gets me through the day.” Georgia was a vibrant light and her brightness and love filled up the room. She was an inspiration to her family, friends and many students, whose lives are forever touched by her love, boundless energy, enthusiasm, curiosity and witty sense of humor. She had a dazzling personality and brought happiness, laughter and smiles to all. She won the hearts and souls of all she met. Though she never married or had children of her own, she shared her love of mankind, and thousands of students were touched by her loving care and attention; she gave her best every day to all who were lucky enough to encounter her. Whether you knew her 5 minutes, 5 years, or 50 years, her deep compassion and love of all overcame you with a sense of belonging and understanding. She impacted so many lives. She was the life of the party and loved theater, music, books (especially science fiction), movies, swimming, singing, dancing and travel, as well as her coffee friends at Zocalo’s. She traveled to Europe many times but her favorite was her Greek parent’s village of Kyparissi. She leaves behind her greatest hopes, dreams and joy to her family, friends and students. She had a way of making you feel you were the most important person in the world and she left this world a better place by her love, deep care and concern. We will miss and cherish the wonderful memories you gave us and you will remain forever in our hearts. She is survived by her sisters, Anne Sarris of San Jose and Clara Meniktas of Castro Valley; neices, Dede De Michele and Toni Kalogrides of San Jose, and Anna Meniktas-Edwards of Concord; nephews, Dean Meniktas of Moraga and Michael Meniktas of San Francisco; and grand-nephews and nieces, Marty De Michele, Maria Indalos, Joey and JR De Michele, Demetra Kalogrides, Alex Kalogrides, Georgia Barnes, Alexandra Meniktas, Natalie Meniktas, Claire Meniktas, and Melina Meniktas. Please join us in celebrating the Life and Times of Georgia Vlahos. Family, friends and former students are invited to attend the Trisagion (Wake) Service on Thursday, Aug. 21, at 6 p.m. and the funeral memorial service on Friday, Aug. 22, at 10:30 a.m. Both services will be held at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Ascension, 4700 Lincoln Ave., in Oakland. All are invited to the luncheon to follow after the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to St. Joseph Notre Dame Tuition Endowment Fund, 1011 Chestnut St., Alameda, CA  94501; Breast Cancer Fund, 1388 Sutter St. #400, San Francisco, CA  94109; or the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Ascension. PIPER, Barbara Ann, peacefully returned home into the loving arms of our Lord on July 30 at the age of 89. She was surrounded by three generations of family who were given the gift of being by her side in her final hours — holding her hand, sharing fond memories, and praying the rosary. Barbara was kindhearted, thoughtful and generous in nature, and all who knew her loved and respected her. Her quiet strength, giving spirit and passionate devotion to God saw her living independently and in overall good health to the very end. Barbara was a devote Catholic who watched daily Mass on EWTN. She was a “Prayer Warrior” whose days were spent in prayer for her family, the country and peace in the world. She loved the Rosary and prayed it twice each day. Born in Medford, Massachusetts, she was a true New Englander who moved to San Leandro in July 1975, where she has lived for the past 39 years, the last 30 in the same apartment. She worked for many years as a nurses aide in the Prenatal Clinic at Fairmont Hospital. Her greatest joys were her family and her faith. Mother of five, grandmother of six, and great-grandmother of seven, her family stretches from Massachusetts to Maui. She was blessed to be close in proximity to three great-grandchildren who brought her daily joy. Sarah and James Gebhardt enjoyed their visits to “Great Grandma Piper’s,” where their favorite snack of graham crackers and milk were always on the menu. Barbara’s last outing was to St. Leander Church for the Baptism of her newest great-grandson, Colin Michael Martinez. She is survived by her loving daughters, Janet Gebhardt (Russell) and Marianne Perata (Paul), both of San Leandro; and adoring sons, James Piper (Irene) and Michael Piper (Lisa), both of Woburn, Massachusetts, and Timothy Piper (Danny) of Oakland, as well as “just-like-a-daughter,” Nancy Hollister of Castro Valley. She will be deeply missed by her cherished grandchildren, Michael Gebhardt (Nelly) of San Leandro, Roni Piper Rego of Concord, Keli Autumn Martinez (Brian) of Pleasanton, Carrie Ann Haas of Maui, and Paula Merva (Martin) and Kelly Smith (Dan) of Massachusetts. She will always be loved and remembered by her sister, Mary Walsh (Bernard); and brother, Guy Washburn (Helen) of Massachusetts. We have lost an amazing woman who was deeply loved and who loved deeply, but gained an Angel who will watch over and guide us until we join her for all eternity in our Heavenly Home! Private services were held and final interment will be back in Woburn, Massachusetts. Barbara is going HOME in more ways than one! God is good… so very, very good!

WARREN, Mary Frances, of  Oakland  passed away on July 28, 2014, at age 78. Arrangements were made at San Leandro Funeral Home, (510) 483-5300.
