Art Around Town: A.R.T., Inc. Members’ Exhibit | Print |  E-mail

By Winda Shimizu

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to find and share stories from visitors to exhibits at the Adobe Art Gallery and other Castro Valley venues showcasing A.R.T., Inc. members.

To my surprise, my neighbor was the source of my first story.

Mr. Cerelli had visited the Adobe Art Gallery in the fall 2012 where he ran into his friend Susan Sarti, who was exhibiting her mixed media collage “Lyrics.” He purchased Sarti’s work as a holiday gift for another friend who was overjoyed at receiving an original art piece – something she had always dreamed of. Cerelli’s story had a happy ending.

The new A.R.T., Inc. Members’ exhibit at the Adobe, which runs through March 2, features 51 local artists and a variety of art mediums.

Art judge Michael Azgour had the honor of selecting six artists for the Award of Merit: Atilla Cziglenyi, Red Baron of Benicia (oil); Mark Mertens, Tre Amici (pastel); Ingrid Moller, The Three Graces (clay); Stan Stadelman, Garden of Gethsemane (watercolor); Bev Lindsay, Scenes of Utah (acrylic); and Susan Sarti, Up Jumped Spring (mixed media).

Honorable mentions were given to Richard Geiger, Storm Wave (watercolor); Elaine Ascencio, Embroidered Organisms (fiber art); Jon Nesseth, Paradise (pencil); Michael Belew, Oak at Sunrise (archival digital print); Ethel Whitfield Morgan, Lilies & Lemons (oil); Pushpa Dalal, Something Real Imagined (digital composite on metal); and Ellen Bailey, Wonders Down Under (watercolor).

The Adobe Art Gallery is open Thursday, Friday and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and by appointment.

You can experience even more art all over Castro Valley. Dino’s Restaurant shows Marion Girard’s beautiful paintings of Cull Canyon.  Bank of the West presents a collection of multi media pieces by Barbara Bernner until March 31. Bernner is also at the Aiken Senior Center until Feb. 12. The Castro Valley Library presents “Fresh Paint” by Lynne Shephard until  March 11.

The free art demos continue with painter Gerald Boyd from 1 to 3 p.m Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Adobe Art Center. Boyd is a representational artist who works with oil, pastel and watercolors. His paintings are in private collections throughout the United States.

Future demos include Mark Monserrat, with a class on how to fix your painting, March 23, and a Robin Lassar photography demo on May 11.

A.R.T., Inc. welcomes its 2013 board of directors: Nick Calarco, President; Leila Chair, V.P.

Event Chair, Mark Mertens, Treasurer; and Valerie Snart, Secretary.

Whether you are looking for an original piece to give a loved one, or just wanting to explore new things in the New Year, do not miss the opportunity to treat yourself with the wealth of local art.
