San Ramon Knocks Pirates Out of Playoffs
By Jim Knowles
San Ramon Valley quarterback
Joe Southwick delivered
under pressure Friday night at
Burrell Field to eliminate San
Leandro from the North Coast
Section 1-A playoffs with a convincing
42-14 win.
The Pirates went after
Southwick, but the quick-footed
senior broke out of the pocket
and improvised. He completed
19 of 30 passes for 250 yards
with four touchdown tosses. |
San Leandro Wins League Championship
The San Leandro High football
team must keep their opponents
guessing as they head into
the North Coast Section playoffs
this week.
You can’t just focus on stopping
a couple of top players, because
the Pirates have so many
athletes who can break the game
open, and they demonstrated that
last Thursday night in a 55-0 win
over Mt. Eden at Chabot College.
The win gave San Leandro
the Hayward Area Athletic
League championship for the
second straight year. The Pirates
finished the season with a 7-3
record, and a perfect 7-0 in the
HAAL.

Dons Fall to O’Dowd, 21-13, in the Drizzle
The Arroyo High football
team had the tying touchdown
in their sights on a rain-soaked
field Saturday, but Bishop
O’Dowd picked off a pass in
the end zone to sink the Dons,
21-13.
O’Dowd running back
Mario Brown found enough traction
on the wet field to break
away on an 83-yard touchdown
run in the first quarter to put the
Dragons ahead.

Rookie End Catches Coach’s Eye
With sackmaster Derrick
Burgess sidelined with a triceps
strain, coaches were forced to
dip down deep into the depth
chart to fill the void.
Trevor Scott, Oakland’s
sixth-round draft pick out of the
University of Buffalo, along
with Jay Richardson and
Kalimba Edwards, now form a
three-man rotation of defensive
ends primed to punish and pressure
opposing quarterbacks.

Michael Young
Michael Young plans on begining his high school football career next year at Arroyo high, as a sophomore.
The 14-year-old has been playing Pop Warner for six years, and has been a Crusaders Midget for the past two years. His coach, Billy Suess says Young had the chance to compete in two consecutive championship games.
Most recently, Young performed exceptionally well in last Saturday’s championship game against Antioch.

For the first time in his high school career, Danny Thomas competed in cross country this season without his older brother Derek.
The Arroyo High School junior fought off sickness for part of the season and struggled but he made a comeback at last Saturday’s Hayward Area Athletic
League finals at Hayward High.
“I had competed against some of the same people before, so I knew what I was going up against,” says Thomas.

New Treatments for Foot Wounds in Diabetics Can Save Limbs...and Lives
A blistered toe or a scraped
heel may be minor annoyances
to most people, but to long-term
diabetics, these injuries can allow
deadly bacteria to enter the
body, leading to foot sores and
ulcers.
Because these patients often
have poor circulation in the
lower limbs, they have a harder
time fighting off this bacterial
invasion, and if the infection
spreads, it can lead to gangrene,
amputations, or even death.
